Terms that decide this screen
These are the exact keywords ATS systems extract from finance analyst job descriptions. Miss them and you are filtered out before a recruiter sees your name.
How to structure your skills section
Group them the way a parser reads them — one labelled line per category, plain commas, no tables.
5 resume mistakes that get finance analysts filtered out
The patterns we see most often on finance analyst resumes that fail ATS screening — each with the edit that fixes it.
Not quantifying financial impact
"Analyzed budget" → "Built rolling 12-month forecast model reducing forecasting error from 18% to 4%, used by CFO for quarterly board presentations"
Weak Excel bullets
"Proficient in Excel" is invisible to ATS. Write: "Built dynamic 3-statement financial model in Excel with 200+ rows of scenario analysis, reducing manual reporting time by 6 hours/week"
Not mentioning the size of budget/portfolio you worked on
Size signals seniority. "Managed ₹40Cr operating budget" or "Covered 15 companies with ₹2,000Cr+ combined market cap"
Skipping Python/SQL for data-heavy finance roles
Fintech and analytics-heavy finance roles increasingly require SQL and Python. Add them if you have them — they significantly expand your addressable job market
Not aligning your CFA level to the role
CFA Level 1 matters for entry-level research and IB roles. CFA Level 3 (or charterholder) is the signal for portfolio management and senior research. Don't undersell your CFA progress

Finance Analyst resume — frequently asked questions
Is CFA required for finance analyst roles?
For equity research and asset management roles, CFA (or enrollment) is often preferred or required. For corporate finance, FP&A, and banking analyst roles, it is valued but not always required. The designation adds direct ATS keyword value.
What Excel skills should be on a finance analyst resume?
Advanced Excel is the minimum: VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, array formulas, Power Query. For senior roles: VBA macros, complex financial models, and Excel-based dashboards. Mention specific models you've built.
Should a finance analyst include Python on their resume?
Yes, if you know it. Python is increasingly expected in fintech, quantitative finance, and modern FP&A roles. pandas for data manipulation and xlwings for Excel automation are the most directly applicable skills.
How do I show investment research experience without an IB or PE background?
University portfolios, stock pitch competitions, investment clubs, and CFA Institute Research Challenge all count as experience. Frame them with the same structure: universe covered, methodology, and any measurable outcome.
What is the difference between FP&A and investment banking on a resume?
FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) is internal corporate finance — budgeting, forecasting, business partnering. Investment banking is transactional — M&A, capital raises, financial modeling for deals. The skill sets overlap but the framing is very different.
